History

The company that eventually became El Aero Services began as Gourley Flying Service at the Elko Airport during World War II, primarily as a flight instruction school.  At the end of WWII, the GI Bill made funds available to furloughed servicemen for flight instruction.  Flight instruction and agricultural spraying were the main revenue sources for the company.

Ralph Scott, who had worked for Lou Gourley, joined with silent partner Dick Warren, and acquired the company in 1945.  The company was sold to Ralph Scott in 1946, and the name was changed to El Aero Services.  The company was incorporated later that year as a Nevada Corporation.

Frank and Phyllis Hooper purchased the company in 1968, and combined it the same year with Elko Air Service.  El Aero Services became the only Fixed Base Operator at the Elko Airport, and it offered charter services in addition to flight instruction, aircraft fuel sales, and aircraft repair facilities.  Additional aircraft were added by the Hoopers, and the first helicopter was acquired and put into service in 1973. With the addition of helicopter service it situated El Aero Services to provide support to the growing mining industry and assist the Department of Interior and United States Forrest Service in managing federal lands located in Nevada.

Another major transition occurred in 1984, when El Aero Services, Inc. was purchased by Wesley M. Dixon, Jr.  Mr. Dixon realized the need for additional aircraft and helicopters, thus positioning El Aero to become the dominate air service provider in northern Nevada.

The Carson City location was acquired in 1987.  Located in the State Capitol, this location grew quickly and has become a major part of the company.  Since the acquisition of the Carson City location, the Carson City airport has grown to accommodate a growing number of cooperate and private aircraft that frequent the area.  With Carson’s close proximity to Reno and South Lake Tahoe, El Aero has grown to meets the needs of the flying public traversing to and from the Reno/Lake Tahoe area.

Currently, El Aero Services, Inc. provides a full range of services in Carson City and Elko.  Both locations have 145 Repair Stations and each location offers a Full Service FBO including hangar facilities and office space for rent.

El Aero specializes in a number of aerial operations including claim staking for local mining companies, fire fighting support for the BLM and USFS, aerial seeding for range restoration, and environmental surveys for both government and private organizations.  El Aero also provides air support for various energy companies, motion picture companies, and performs sling work for construction projects.

For over 60 years El Aero Services has grown with the ever changing and demanding needs of the general aviation community.  Our pilots and maintenance technicians are seasoned and have many years experience.
